Job Summary
Mariana Minerals is seeking a Machine Learning Engineer to develop and improve machine learning systems used to control mineral refining facilities. This role focuses on reinforcement learning, physically realistic process simulators, model training, simulation-to-reality validation, and production deployment of AI systems that optimize mineral recovery, reagent consumption, energy intensity, and equipment uptime.

Key Responsibilities

  • Run reinforcement learning experiments in physically realistic simulators of mineral processing operations.
  • Help translate simulation results into improved process controllers.
  • Build and refine machine learning training environments, including reward functions, observations, and action logic.
  • Train control models and evaluate their performance.
  • Investigate model underperformance and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Compare simulated model behavior against real plant data to help close the gap between simulation and physical operations.
  • Identify areas where simulator behavior diverges from real process physics.
  • Write clean, well-tested production code.
  • Contribute to software services used to deploy machine learning models into operating facilities.
  • Collaborate with process engineering and chemistry experts to understand and model mineral processing unit operations.
  • Support the development of autonomous control systems for mineral refining circuits.
  • Use plant performance data to improve future model training and control strategies.

Qualifications

  • Two to eight or more years of experience in machine learning, reinforcement learning, scientific computing, internships, or relevant research.
  • Strong recent graduates with demonstrated project depth may also be considered.
  • Solid understanding of machine learning fundamentals.
  • Working knowledge of modern deep learning techniques.
  • Exposure to reinforcement learning strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency in Python.
  • Ability to read, understand, and debug existing software codebases.
  • Interest in physical and industrial systems.
  • Willingness to learn chemistry and process engineering concepts.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently.
  • Ability to identify and escalate technical blockers effectively.
