Job Summary
Climax Molybdenum, a Freeport-McMoRan company, is seeking a Geomechanical Engineer II – Underground to support underground excavation stability management at its Henderson operations in Colorado. This role focuses on ground support design, underground excavation stability monitoring, geotechnical analysis, and geomechanical support for safe hard rock underground mining.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee underground excavation stability management functions, including support design and stability monitoring.
  • Perform geotechnical analyses related to underground mining and excavation stability.
  • Document and present geomechanical findings to mine and site personnel.
  • Develop and review ground support designs for underground excavations using empirical, kinematic, and stress-based analysis methods.
  • Manage and review underground excavation stability data collection, analysis, monitoring data processing, and remedial work.
  • Communicate accurate and timely geomechanical information through reports and presentations.
  • Identify improvements to safe mining practices related to monitoring, maintenance, support design, and data acquisition.
  • Develop, maintain, and implement strategic plans to enhance underground excavation stability programs.
  • Provide geomechanical project oversight and review for external consultants.
  • Use technical software including MS Office, AutoCAD, Deswik or equivalent, and RocScience tools such as unWedge, Phase2, RS3, and Dips.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate engineering discipline and three years of related hard rock mining experience related to rock mechanics and underground excavation stability; or
  • Master’s degree in an appropriate engineering discipline and two years of related hard rock mining experience related to rock mechanics and underground excavation stability.
  • Experience with underground mining, rock mechanics, and excavation stability.
  • Ability to perform geotechnical analysis and communicate findings through reports and presentations.
  • Knowledge of underground ground support design and stability monitoring practices.
  • Experience with empirical, kinematic, and stress-based analysis methods.
  • Experience using AutoCAD, Deswik or equivalent mine planning software, and RocScience tools preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mine Engineering, Geological Engineering, or Geotechnical Engineering preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Candidates may be required to pass a medical exam.
  • Candidates must pass all required training and testing.
  • Employees may be required to work a non-standard schedule, including shift work, in a 24/7 operation.
  • Pre-employment drug testing and ongoing drug and alcohol testing may be required, as allowed by applicable laws.
