Job Summary
Sawtooth Mining / North American Mining is seeking a Surveyor to support mining operations at the Thacker Pass Project in Orovada, Nevada.
This role is responsible for conducting ground and unmanned aerial surveys, processing and managing survey data, providing AutoCAD drafting support, supporting mine planning and production activities, and installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting machine control systems for accurate positioning and operational efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform survey work in accordance with MSHA regulations, company safety procedures, and state and federal environmental requirements
- Collect field data using GPS and traditional surveying equipment
- Calculate volumes moved by equipment, including stockpile volumes, truck/shovel yards, and pond capacities
- Establish control and targets for aerial surveys
- Pilot UAS drones for aerial surveys
- Process drone data to produce topographic maps, quantity calculations, and aerial photos
- Perform CAD work including volume computations, haul/ramp designs, and 3D modeling
- Manage survey and operational data in spreadsheets
- Calculate monthly pit inventory and ore severed for royalty payments
- Prepare end-of-month reports and maps
- Perform construction staking for haul roads, ponds, boundaries, and related mine infrastructure
- Create GPS files for operations equipment
- Draft maps, permitting documents, mine plans, and related materials using AutoCAD
- Install, maintain, and calibrate surveying and machine control equipment
- Provide survey support to departments for special projects
Qualifications
- Minimum of two years of post-secondary education in Civil Engineering Technology, Surveying, or a related discipline, or appropriate surveying and computer experience
- Additional relevant surveying experience preferred
- FAA Part 107 drone license required or ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
- Knowledge of land surveying and engineering principles and practices
- Experience with surveying at a surface mining operation
- Proficiency with AutoCAD, Carlson/Trimble, and Microsoft 365
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with coworkers on projects
- Ability to organize day-to-day survey activities
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work safely in all weather conditions
Physical Requirements
- Occasionally lift up to 60 pounds, including lath, GPS equipment, and survey materials
- Occasionally push or pull up to 30 pounds
- Occasionally stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, and handle survey materials or equipment
- Frequently carry up to 50 pounds, including lath, GPS equipment, and field materials
- Frequently climb and balance while working around spoils, pits, and survey vehicles
- Frequently use total stations, data recorders, computers, and related survey equipment
- Continually stand, walk, sit, perform repetitive motion, speak, hear, and see during surveying, drafting, driving, and computer work
- Use depth perception and color vision for driving, surveying, AutoCAD work, maps, flagging, and field marking
