Job Summary
Equinox Gold is seeking a Sr. Environmental Engineer to support environmental compliance, risk management, regulatory reporting, and sustainable mining practices at the Castle Mountain mine site.

This role assists the Environmental Manager in ensuring gold mining operations comply with federal, state, local, and California-specific environmental regulations, while also helping integrate environmental controls into mine planning and daily operations. :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain the site’s environmental compliance program
  • Monitor regulatory changes and update internal policies and procedures
  • Conduct internal audits, risk assessments, and compliance investigations
  • Provide environmental compliance training to site personnel
  • Prepare reports for the Environmental Manager, senior leadership, and regulatory agencies
  • Oversee environmental specialists supporting compliance activities
  • Ensure compliance with SMARA, CEQA, ESA, CESA, NEPA, Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act, TRI, RCRA, and other applicable regulations
  • Manage permits related to air quality, water quality, hazardous materials, hazardous waste, surface water jurisdictions, and waste management
  • Coordinate with geologists, engineers, and operations teams to integrate environmental controls into mine planning and daily operations
  • Monitor and report on cyanide handling, wildlife incidents, and Cyanide Code obligations
  • Monitor revegetation facilities and reclamation activities
  • Conduct environmental impact assessments and mitigation planning
  • Support coordination with county, state, and federal regulatory agencies
  • Maintain documentation for inspections, spills, corrective actions, SOPs, policies, and forms
  • Support sustainability initiatives including land restoration, water conservation, reclamation, and biodiversity protection
  • Present environmental data, interpret regulations, and prepare detailed technical reports
  • Supervise Environmental Engineers, Environmental Technicians, and support staff

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Geology, Mining Engineering, or a related field required
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in the mining industry
  • At least 8 years of experience in environmental compliance or coordination
  • Strong knowledge of California mining regulations, compliance, and permitting processes
  • Ability to work in remote and rugged environments
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Excellent technical writing and persuasive communication skills
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and develop realistic action plans
  • Experience managing changes and delays in complex environments
  • Ability to build relationships and coordinate with internal teams and external agencies
  • Ability to lead and empower environmental specialists and support staff
  • Experience with environmental management systems such as ISO 14001 and Benchmark Gensuite is a plus
  • Familiarity with mine reclamation planning and reporting preferred
  • Proficiency in GIS, environmental modeling, and compliance tracking software preferred
  • Professional certifications such as CHMM, REM, CEM, CCEP, California PE, or California PG registration are highly desirable

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work at an active mine site, including open pit mining areas, processing facilities, leach pads, maintenance areas, and office environments
  • Ability to work in desert climate conditions including heat, cold, wind, dust, and occasional precipitation or flash flooding
  • Ability to work around mobile equipment, mechanical parts, blasting activities, noise, vibration, diesel exhaust, chemicals, fuels, oils, and airborne particles
  • Ability to work outdoors on uneven or rough terrain
  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, bend, reach, climb, kneel, crouch, and maintain situational awareness in an active mining environment
  • Manual dexterity and ability to operate tools, equipment, controls, and computer systems
  • Ability to wear required PPE including hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, safety footwear, respiratory protection, and other task-specific PPE
