Job Summary
Colorado School of Mines is seeking an On-Site Systems and Software Support Engineer to provide technical support and installation services for university technology systems.
This role supports applications, services, software, computers, telephones, classroom and meeting space audiovisual systems, deployed network equipment, and other campus technologies. The position works directly with faculty, researchers, administrators, staff, students, visitors, and IT teams to troubleshoot issues, implement solutions, and support reliable technology operations across campus.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide high-level technical support, consultation, installation, and configuration services for university technology systems
- Troubleshoot computers, peripheral devices, network connections, operating systems, software applications, and classroom technologies
- Assess client needs, diagnose technical issues, determine root causes, and implement permanent solutions or temporary workarounds
- Support classrooms, computer labs, conference rooms, event spaces, and audiovisual systems
- Provide live technology support for campus events, including audio-visual, computer, and system support
- Install and support network devices such as wireless access points and telephones
- Support virtual meetings, collaboration tools, live production, event capture, streaming, recording, and presentations
- Provide technical support across Windows, macOS, and Linux environments
- Support advanced scientific instrumentation used in higher education STEM environments
- Evaluate, prioritize, resolve, or escalate support requests based on urgency, impact, and available resources
- Respond to assigned tickets and assist other team members with ticket resolution
- Serve as a front-facing support liaison for desk-side technology support issues
- Create and maintain support documentation for the Service Desk and other IT teams
- Collaborate with subject matter experts, senior technical staff, and engineering teams to resolve complex issues
- Assist with mentoring, training, and supporting student employees
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in information technology, engineering, computer science, business, or a related discipline required
- 4+ years of experience in an IT service-related role
- Experience managing shifting priorities, demands, and timelines in a high-pressure environment
- Excellent customer service skills
- Advanced interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills
- Ability to perform analysis, design, and problem solving in a complex technology environment
- High-level understanding of operating systems, programming concepts, data structures, diagnostic techniques, software engineering, networking, and communication methods
- Working knowledge of Google Apps, Microsoft Office 365, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and other standard applications
- Familiarity with web conferencing platforms
- Basic understanding of audiovisual technologies, including video conferencing, live lecture capture, control systems, digital signage, security cameras, and networked A/V
- Knowledge of installing, configuring, upgrading, troubleshooting, and repairing hardware and peripherals
- Understanding of complex networked environments, including the OSI model, centralized storage, authorization, authentication, group policies, and advanced management
- Ability to instruct users on new or upgraded computer applications and hardware
- Experience providing one-on-one support in a teaching and learning environment preferred
- Basic Linux, Microsoft Intune, and JAMF MDM support experience preferred
Physical Requirements
- Provide on-site technology support across classrooms, computer labs, conference rooms, event spaces, and campus facilities
- Support live events during traditional business hours, off-hours, and weekends as required
- Install, configure, troubleshoot, and support hardware, peripherals, audiovisual systems, telephones, and network devices across campus
