Job Summary
Mariana Minerals is seeking a Senior Machine Learning Engineer to help develop and deploy machine learning systems for autonomous mineral refining operations.
This role will work on production machine learning, reinforcement learning, process simulation, data pipelines, and real-time optimization systems that directly impact mineral processing performance, recovery rates, energy consumption, reagent usage, and plant uptime.
Key Responsibilities
- Partner with process chemistry and engineering teams to develop data-driven models of chemical unit operations
- Train and deploy reinforcement learning models to control real-world mineral processing operations
- Use physically realistic simulators to pretrain reinforcement learning control algorithms
- Work with subject matter experts to diagnose gaps between simulated and real-world performance
- Build and maintain techno-economic models that combine process simulation, capital costs, operating costs, and commodity price scenarios
- Collaborate on sensor and instrumentation strategy to improve model performance through inline measurement data
- Design and evolve data architecture for training, validation, deployment, and monitoring of production ML systems
- Support autonomous control of mineral refining circuits through models that optimize recovery, reagent consumption, energy intensity, and equipment uptime
- Work across machine learning, process engineering, data infrastructure, and plant operations teams
Qualifications
- 4+ years of post-school experience in machine learning engineering or a closely related role
- Strong grounding in machine learning fundamentals
- Ability to translate research ideas into novel production systems
- Experience with techno-economic modeling, process simulation, or quantitative analysis in complex systems
- Proven ability to develop, deploy, and operate machine learning models in production environments
- Comfort working in high-ambiguity environments with chemical engineers, metallurgists, process engineers, and geologists
- Ability to work across the ML stack, including data pipelines, model inference, deployment, validation, and monitoring
- Experience or interest in reinforcement learning, process control, autonomous systems, and industrial optimization
- Strong analytical, technical communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills
