Job Summary
Kinross Gold Corporation is seeking a Mine Electrician to support safe installation, maintenance, testing, and repair of high-voltage electrical systems at the Curlew mine.
This role is responsible for maintaining critical power distribution infrastructure, including transformers, substations, switchgear, overhead and underground distribution systems, and 480v and 120v systems on underground mobile equipment. The Mine Electrician supports system reliability, operational continuity, and safe execution of electrical work in alignment with MSHA, electrical codes, and company standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate in planning, installation, commissioning, and upgrade projects for high-voltage electrical systems and distribution infrastructure
- Install, inspect, maintain, test, and repair high-voltage equipment including transformers, circuit breakers, switchgear, substations, and power lines
- Test, repair, install, and maintain 480v and 120v systems on underground mobile equipment including development jumbos, bolters, and production drills
- Install and maintain mine communications infrastructure such as mine phones, leaky feeder systems, and fiber optic network communications
- Conduct high-voltage switching operations, isolations, LOTO, grounding procedures, and circuit energization
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve faults in high-voltage distribution systems using test equipment, schematics, and technical standards
- Perform thermography, insulation resistance testing, contact resistance testing, relay checks, and other preventive maintenance tasks
- Maintain readiness of critical high-voltage components and appropriate inventory levels for rapid response
- Coordinate with electrical, maintenance, operations, and engineering teams during outages, shutdowns, and system upgrades
- Ensure all electrical work meets Kinross SafeGround expectations and follows NFPA 70E, MSHA, NEC, and company standards
- Document maintenance, inspections, switching activities, testing results, and repair work in the CMMS
- Mentor and support lower-level electricians in safe high-voltage work practices
- Participate in energy efficiency and cost reduction initiatives related to power distribution reliability
- Maintain strong housekeeping and ensure tools, PPE, and equipment are inspected and maintained properly
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required
- Electrical trade qualification or diploma preferred
- HV Switching Operator certification and current electrical license preferred
- 5+ years of experience working at an underground mining operation
- Current Underground 5000-23 preferred
- Experience maintaining and repairing transformers, substations, breakers, relays, and switchgear
- Strong knowledge of high-voltage switching procedures, arc flash safety, and electrical isolation practices
- Ability to read and interpret high-voltage diagrams, one-line drawings, and electrical schematics
- Proficiency troubleshooting high-voltage faults with appropriate diagnostic tools
- Strong understanding of MSHA, NEC, NFPA 70E, and other applicable electrical safety standards
- Ability to prioritize work, respond to urgent electrical issues, and manage conflicting priorities
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and mentor less experienced personnel
- Good communication skills and ability to work with multidisciplinary teams
- Valid driver’s license required
- Authorized to work in the United States
Physical Requirements
- Work indoors and outdoors in a remote mine site environment
- Potential exposure to weather, heights, energized equipment, and high-voltage hazards
- Wear personal protective equipment at all times while in the production environment
- Observe, correct, and report unsafe conditions
- Follow operating procedures and comply with all safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements
