Job Summary
Ausenco is seeking a Mechanical Layout Designer to join its Minerals and Metals business line in either the Tucson or Denver office.
This role is responsible for creating and managing spatial and mechanical arrangements of equipment, systems, and infrastructure for mining and heavy industrial projects. The position requires strong CAD and 3D modeling skills, interdisciplinary coordination, and adherence to project and client standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Produce 2D and 3D mechanical layouts for mining projects, including concentrators, material handling systems, processing plants, and industrial facilities
- Create 3D models, general arrangement drawings, and equipment models using project design software
- Use tools such as SmartPlant, AutoCAD, Bentley OpenPlant Modeler, OpenPlant P&ID, Navisworks, and Autodesk Advance Steel
- Coordinate with process, mechanical, structural, civil, electrical, and instrumentation teams
- Review and verify 3D models and drawings for compliance with engineering requirements
- Conduct technical quality audits and support model data integrity
- Manage project budgets, schedules, and deliverables related to layout work
- Coordinate with client representatives and support proposal preparation
- Provide feedback on deliverables and support project execution standards
- Facilitate interdisciplinary coordination during model development
Qualifications
- Technical college or university degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology or a related field
- 4-6 years of experience in heavy industrial design or layout
- Mining or mineral processing experience preferred
- Working knowledge of HEXAGON SmartPlant preferred
- Experience with AutoCAD, AutoPLANT 3D, MicroStation, or similar design tools
- Ability to deliver design drafting according to project requirements, regulations, codes, and standards
- Ability to maintain consistent design drafting standards across project areas
- Strong interdisciplinary coordination skills
- Experience supporting integrated mechanical and layout design for industrial projects
