Job Summary
Colorado School of Mines is seeking an Online Learning Experience Designer to support Mines Online in the development of graduate and professional education programs.

This role focuses on designing rigorous, engaging, accessible, and measurable online learning experiences for working professionals at a top-tier STEM institution. The position partners with Mines faculty, subject matter experts, media specialists, and assessment partners to translate complex STEM knowledge into cohesive, outcome-driven online courses.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the instructional design and development of Mines Online Professional Education courses from concept through launch and iteration
  • Support the development of credit-bearing online courses through a collaborative process with Mines faculty
  • Design end-to-end online learning experiences, including self-paced and facilitated courses
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts to define measurable learning outcomes, learner-centered course structures, learning activities, and assessments
  • Develop full self-study courses using purchased, open educational, or curated materials when subject matter experts are not available
  • Create instructional assets across text, graphics, video, audio, and interactive media in partnership with media specialists
  • Design authentic practice opportunities, formative feedback, and summative assessments aligned with learning outcomes
  • Apply Mines’ Engineering Learning design principles and Professional Education branding standards
  • Ensure courses meet accessibility, ADA/WCAG, and copyright compliance expectations
  • Use learning analytics, learner feedback, and performance data to improve course quality and impact
  • Contribute instructional design expertise to cross-functional teaching and learning initiatives
  • Support special projects and strategic initiatives for Mines Online and Mines Professional Education

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of professional experience in instructional design or online learning experience design
  • Deep knowledge of learning theory, instructional design models, and adult learning principles
  • Demonstrated ability to design coherent courses with aligned outcomes, assessments, and learning activities
  • Experience using learning analytics and data to inform course design decisions
  • Strong curriculum and lesson planning experience
  • Proficiency designing and building courses within at least one learning management system
  • Strong visual design sensibility, including storyboarding and experience with tools such as Adobe Creative Cloud
  • Ability to manage multiple complex projects, meet deadlines, and work independently
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to write clear, engaging instructional copy, including scripts for video and audio
  • Strong working knowledge of ADA compliance and web accessibility
  • Master’s degree in instructional design, educational technology, curriculum and instruction, or a closely related field preferred
  • Online learning design experience in higher education preferred
  • Working knowledge of HTML/CSS for LMS customization and troubleshooting preferred
  • Experience designing continuing or professional education programs preferred
  • Familiarity with STEM disciplines or technical subject matter preferred
