Job Summary
Phoenix Tailings is seeking a Chemical Development Engineer I to support the design, development, and optimization of critical metals production systems.

This role supports rare earth element processing technologies, laboratory-scale experiments, process modeling, hydrometallurgical development, and early-stage metallization research to help advance clean and sustainable critical metals production.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and execute laboratory-scale experiments across rare earth extraction and metallization process flowsheets
  • Build and validate process models, including mass and energy balances
  • Optimize chloride leaching, dissolution, and filtration operations to improve efficiency and product quality
  • Support development of advanced separation techniques for rare earth purification and concentration
  • Develop precipitation processes for converting rare earth chlorides into high-purity oxides
  • Contribute to early-stage metallization R&D for converting oxides into individual rare earth metals
  • Analyze experimental data and use findings to improve process development
  • Specify and evaluate equipment for pilot and commercial-scale implementation
  • Document research procedures, findings, and technical recommendations
  • Ensure experiments and development activities align with EH&S and sustainability standards
  • Support technical infrastructure development for clean critical metals production

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field required
  • 1-3 years of experience in chemical or metallurgical process development
  • Internship and co-op experience may be considered
  • Familiarity with mass and energy balances, process modeling, and basic process calculations
  • Experience interpreting or developing PFDs and P&IDs
  • Hands-on experience with laboratory or pilot-scale chemical equipment
  • Comfortable using tools for data analysis and reporting such as Excel, Python, or similar
  • Strong communication skills and ability to clearly document technical work
  • Familiarity with rare earth chemistry or hydrometallurgy is a plus
  • Curiosity, mission-driven mindset, and interest in solving critical resource challenges
